Plotting an inclusive province

Building on the successes of our past, our strategic plan provides a structure for the next three years that will allow us to develop services and other needed resources to ensure the province has a great degree of inclusion.

Our Strategic Plan 2014/17 outlines a vision of greater inclusion, improved services, and enhanced outcomes for persons with disabilities in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have a rich history of supporting persons with disabilities, and this experience serves as the foundation in building this three year Strategic Plan. The plan identifies key strategic directions and priorities focused on strengthening and expanding partnerships to improve consumer services, facilitating improved planning and collaboration, and encouraging enhanced inclusion for persons with disabilities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Strategic Directions and Goals

Empower Board of Directors and staff have identified three strategic directions as the foundation for this three year strategic plan. These include:

Creating a more inclusive province

Over the 2014 to 2017 period, we will work towards increasing the level of awareness and understanding of the principles of inclusion and the barriers encountered by persons with disabilities

Improving labour market outcomes among persons with disabilities

Over the 2014 to 2017 period, we will develop and implement employment-related supports and services to assist employers with recruiting and retaining persons with disabilities. Services will be focused in two streams. The first, “Raising Awareness/Enhancing Capacity”will be applicable to those interested in generic information, seminars, education, and resources to enhance inclusion in their environments. The second focus will include services and supports based on the individualized needs of businesses, agencies, and employers through “Direct Supports and Services.” Over the 2014 to 2017 period, we will expand employment-related supports and services for persons with disabilities to assist them in preparing for, finding, and keeping employment.

Promoting and enhancing opportunities for independent living among persons with disabilities

Over the 2014 to 2017 period, we will continue to promote and advocate for independent living for persons with disabilities and will focus on improving and expanding access to inclusive supports and services to assist individuals and families in all aspects of community living.

20% of Canadians have a psychological disability.

This highlights the fact that not all disabilities are visible. As well, a large number of people can go through their daily lives without those around them noticing they have a disability.
