OUR HISTORY

Challenging norms and driving change

Empower, The Disability Resource Centre (formerly Independent Living Resource Centre) was originally established by persons with disabilities, community representatives, and advocates as a not-for-profit corporation. With a small staff of three employees, our mandate was set to develop and deliver a broad range of supports and services to people with disabilities and to help advance the Independent Living (IL) movement in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A registered charity managed by an independent Board of Directors, Empower works to enable people with disabilities to take responsibility for, and make informed decisions about, matters that affect their daily lives.

At the centre of all we do… is opportunity.

97% of workers with a disability have great safety records.

In a workplace study, it was found that those with a disability had comparable or better safety records than their co-workers.
